*redbalifrog* has become a much beloved part of my charm collection, and today we take look at a couple very special limited edition charms. Since I discovered the brand a bit late in the year, I missed the release of these lovely beads when they came out in April 2012, but once I began researching and came across the Klimt-inspired charms, they flew to the top of my wishlist. Having absolutely loved my art history class in college, I’ve always been appreciative of the great artists and Gustav Klimt was certainly one of those. Klimt was an Austrian symbolist painter focusing mainly on the female form; he is perhaps best known for his work, “The Kiss,” a wonderfully romantic and popular painting (inset).
Heidi’s Trollbeads & More has been an early retailer of *redbalifrog*, and were actually the collaborating force behind the creation of these wonderful charms. Klimt’s 150th birthday was in 2012 and Vienna hosted a number of events celebrating his life and career; as an Austrian retailer, these Austrian-themed beads were perfect to honor his work. The two charms in this set are Klimt and Art Nouveau, very different in style and yet exquisitely designed. Klimt was a must-have for me, and while I’d love to get Art Nouveau as well, I had to go with my priorities. 😉
Klimt is amazingly detailed and the Tree of Life that is the focal point is incredibly faithful to the painting of the same name. The charm is cylindrical with the tree in the middle and the branches reaching around the circumference of the bead. The lattice-work detailing is around the main barrel, with “Hommage a Klimt” engraved on the outer rim of the bead, while the bottom reads “1862-2012”. Klimt can be worn on a bracelet or a necklace and although the tree is vertically sculpted, it looks fantastic on a bracelet. I absolutely adore this bead since the moment I got it* and I can never take my eyes off Klimt when I’m wearing it.
Art Nouveau features a female face, a subject matter that was Klimt’s muse, but it reminds me of Medusa from the ancient myths, in styling. Below the pendant hangs a freshwater white pearl, and the back of the charm has two loops to string the chain through. Again, this piece can also be worn on a bracelet or necklace although I think it would be amazing on a necklace. Since these beads are exclusive to Heidi’s Trollbeads & More, the hallmark is also slightly different – HBI 925, instead of YB 925 that is normally on the *redbalifrog* charms.
Klimt is €42 and Art Nouveau is €39 – these limited edition beads can only be purchased from Heidi’s Trollbeads & More (they offer worldwide shipping). The website is in German, but the Google Chrome browser or Google Translate will be able to translate the page. Heidi’s also has a few other *redbalifrog* exclusive charms, which I hope to do a review for sometime in the future!
This is one of my most treasured pieces from *redbalifrog* and I’m so happy to have gotten my hands on it. Now for some great news, Amanda mentioned on the *redbalifrog* Facebook page that the next collection will include 3 silver charms and a new lock to be released on February 22nd – Eclectic, Exotic, and Romantic will be the theme (I cannot wait!). I’m glad to have something to look forward to after Valentine’s day since a lot of other brands’ next releases will be for the spring collections.
Most of Klimt’s works during the Golden Phase of his career used gold leaf, so I thought it would it be appropriate to reflect that medium through these yellow/gold beads with an accent of red.
