Ohm Beads Community Design #5 – Chocolate Bar

ohm-beads-chocolate4The Chocolate Bar design* was the winner of the 5th Ohm Beads Community Design Project and released early last month. For those unfamiliar with this event, the Community Design Project is run every few months; once a theme has been assigned, Ohm asks their fans (mainly via Facebook) what charms would they like to see. There have been 5 charms produced from this contest, Black Bird Pie, One World, Girl’s Night Out, Daddy’s Girl, and Chocolate Bar. Winners of #6 and #7 have not been announced yet, but the themes are: Traveling Abroad and Life’s a Beach.

For a limited period of time, Ohm Beads also offered two variations of the Chocolate Bar design: all silver and enamel accents, in addition to the enamel Chocolate Bar, for purchase. I must say I was hesitant about the enamel charm when I first saw it because I’m not a fan of enamel, some beads tend to look tacky with enamel applied, but I was pleasantly surprised. The color was applied carefully and it actually looks like a chocolate bar! I’m tempted to take a bite out of it when I see it on my bracelet. The whole length of the chocolate bar sits on the chain and it’s well-worth the bracelet real estate especially if you’re a devoted chocoholic.

Frankly, I’m surprised there hasn’t been one on the market given all the chocolate lovers out there. In general, there aren’t a lot of food charms which is disappointing since I love to eat. Ohm Beads does have a decent selection of food and drink related beads including Sushi, Fortune Cookie, Burger, Take Out, and Coffee, so Chocolate is a great addition to this set.

The charm is completely compatible with other major bracelet brands including Pandora, and ships directly from Ohm Beads in the US.  For our international readers, my preferred retailer is Perlen and it’s currently available.  While contemplating what beads to pair with this charm, I was at a bit of a loss since I don’t have any food related beads.  I finally settled on pairing it with some of my favorite things along with complementing brown glass beads.

Thanks for sharing your chocolate bead!! Very delicious. I was going to order one but shipping cost to Canada was something ridiculous like $25!!!! Geez, I guess I won’t be getting this bead. I love chocolate and I love beads, so it would have been perfect on my bracelet 🙁

That’s too bad, Grace. You could get it from Perlen and they have free worldwide shipping. 🙂

      • Grace

Thanks Leann. I’ll check Perlen out.

      • Grace

Wow…I am on the perlen site now and I can’t believe the prices!!! So amazing. When they ship to North America, do we have to pay any custom duties? Eg.) on the package does it state how much the items are inside?

      • http://charmsaddict.com Leann

I love Perlen! Their prices are awesome. I’ve never had to pay customs, but I think our requirement is pretty high. Anything over $1000 is subject to duty?

    • Martha

Grace, I’m in Canada and order from Perlen all the time. They take off the VAT and send beads in bubble envelopes through the mail with free shipping. Diamonds4ever does the same. It’s addictive to get the little packets from Denmark!

      • AnnWoo

        That is for SURE!

      • Grace

The free shipping is appealing. Sorry when you mention they take off the VAT, does that mean that we don’t have to pay for duties or the duty tax is already added in the price of the bead. Thanks 🙂

      • Martha

Grace, the envelope is usually marked with a green sticker that says something to the effect of the package is a gift worth around $20. I have not been dinged for Can. taxes or duties yet. For example, I just got my package of the Redbalifrog 55cm necklace and frog-on-the-palm frond dangle from Diamonds4ever in Denmark. On the website they were each about $28 and that’s my total cost. Hope that makes sense.

      • Grace

Thanks Martha 🙂 That’s good to know because once I ordered a book online for $25 and the person shipping from the US to Canada put down that the book was worth $75, so customs made me pay about $30 of duties (more than the cost of the book) to receive it.

I am totally disappointed in Perlen, I purchased a ghost charm from there and received it totally all scratched up and the 925 is all faded and it looks totally used compared to all my new pandora charms that I have purchased directly from the store.

I contacted Tina and I shipped it back to her (at my expense, shipping is expensive from Canada to Denmark) and the response that I got from her was that all the ghost beads are like that and that there’s nothing wrong with it. Is it crazy!!! If you compared a brand new ghost charm from the store vs. what Perlen sent me, anyone with eyes would be able to tell that the ghost I received looks about 3 years old that’s all beat up. Never will I order from Perlen again!!!!

This is a must have for me, living 5 minutes from Hershey, Pa! I would love to eventually have a Pennsylvania themed bracelet. This one and the liberty bell from novobeads are on the top of my list! 🙂

I live in Lancaster Rebecca! Have you ever been to Gem Garden? They have a lancaster pa house and buggy charm!

Perfect! I’m sure Ohm will come out with an I <3 PA charm in the future too ;).

A delicious bracelet looks like a box of chocolates, without the calories.

Thanks, Angela! It looks good enough to eat ;).
